Mary J. Meixell, Ph.D., is the dean of the College of Business at Johnson & Wales University.

As dean, she leads the college by supporting the faculty in their thought leadership and societal impact, and the students in their programs of study as they progress towards rewarding careers.

Dean Meixell teaches operations and supply chain management, project management, and management science. She previously taught at Quinnipiac University and George Mason University, and currently holds a faculty appointment at Johnson & Wales University.

Q&A with Mary

At JWU, education is not confined to the four walls of the classroom. You’re not going to spend four years with your nose buried in a book, learning theories you may never get a chance to apply — you’re going to get out there and apply them, be it through internships, group projects, leadership opportunities, competitions and more.

How Did You Get Started?

I began my career in industry as a supply chain professional and worked in that role for more than ten years before taking up graduate studies in the same field. My research as a faculty member focused on supply chain design, an area that has become of great interest to the public with the notable supply failures of the pandemic. While on faculty, I found faculty service rewarding which led me to academic administration and to JWU as dean of the College of Business.

What Advice Do You Have For Incoming Freshmen?

One of my favorite quotes is “no grit, no pearl.” My best advice to freshmen is to find that grit in yourself and use it in your academic life. You will have moments when you need to dig deep to find the persistence to continue to work on that tough assignment or prepare for that challenging exam. Having grit means that you push yourself to do your best work. At the end, you will be proud of yourself and your "pearl" of accomplishment.
