Stephen Pyle has served at Johnson & Wales University for over 30 years. He has held several faculty and administrative positions across multiple colleges, modalities, and campus locations. Prior to JWU, Professor Pyle held a variety of management positions in the hospitality, special event, and outdoor recreation industries. In addition to cycling cross country, he has also thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail.

Pyle currently serves as Associate Dean of the College of Business.

Scholarly Interests

Dr. Pyle's passion is the role of the department chair in higher education. He has presented and published on a wide variety of topics. These include the development and application of chair competencies, chair creativity, leadership transition, models for hiring and the chair role in managing curriculum effectiveness across multi-campus, multi-modal systems

Q&A with Stephen

At JWU, education is not confined to the four walls of the classroom. You’re not going to spend four years with your nose buried in a book, learning theories you may never get a chance to apply — you’re going to get out there and apply them, be it through internships, group projects, leadership opportunities, competitions and more.

What Advice Do You Have For Incoming Freshmen?

My advice for incoming students is simply - "Show Up". Come to class, visit your faculty during office hours, meet your department chair, join a student group, attend floor meetings, and get to know your faculty mentor and University advisors. Make a real effort to get engaged in your education. It is amazing how many doors will open if you take the time and energy to turn the knobs.
