PROVIDENCE, R.I. — September 16, 2025 – Have you ever wished you could step inside the kitchens at Johnson & Wales University and learn from renowned instructors? Now’s your chance. JWU is pleased to announce the launch of Kitchen Academy, the new home of recreational cooking classes and other public programming at Johnson & Wales University.
Led by Johnson & Wales chef-instructors, classes are designed to be hands-on, interactive and inspiring. From perfecting classic dishes to exploring global cuisines, participants gain new skills while having fun in a professional-grade kitchen. JWU Kitchen Academy is the new home of all external culinary programming at the university, from summer camps for kids and teens to recreational classes for every level and more.
“JWU Kitchen Academy is a way for us to open our doors and give the public a taste of what it’s like to learn at Johnson & Wales from our world-class chefs in a professional kitchen setting,” said Jason Evans, Ph.D., dean of the College of Food Innovation & Technology. “These classes offer a welcoming space for food lovers of all skill levels to explore new techniques, connect over shared meals, and experience the joy of cooking firsthand.”
There is a full slate of beginner-friendly cooking classes planned for Fall 2025, covering a wide range of seasonal topics. Classes are generally three hours in length and combine hands-on experience with demonstrations by chef instructors.
- September 27: Soups & Stocks
Unlock the secret to create rich, flavorful soups and stocks. In this Kitchen Academy class, you will learn the essential techniques for building deep, complex flavors from scratch. Experience how to transform a stock into a comforting and delicious soup!
- October 11 (4 - 7 pm) and October 12 (9 - 4 pm): Fall Artisan Breads
Follow the process of baking a collection of artisan hearth breads from start to finish.
- October 25: “Crocktober” One pot meals
Delicious Meals with Less Mess
Cut down on dishes without cutting corners on flavor! In this hands-on class, you’ll learn the art of creating hearty, balanced, and flavorful meals all in one pot.
- November 22: Perfect Pies and Tempting Tarts
Learn the secrets to flaky crusts, luscious fillings, and show-stopping presentation in this hands-on class dedicated to pies and tarts.
- November 22: Thanksgiving Sides from Scratch
Take your holiday table to the next level with a feast of homemade sides prepared entirely from scratch.
- December 6: Family Day Holiday Bake Off
Get ready for some friendly competition in the kitchen! In this lively, hands-on class, families will team up to create a spread of holiday-inspired baked goods, from cookies and bars to festive breads and sweet treats.
