Going to college can be tough — finding your way around campus, starting classes, meeting faculty, getting to know other students, and, in some cases, moving away from home. Besides the usual questions about buying textbooks, which room your lab is in and how late the library and gym are open, you might want or need some individualized support to help you succeed academically and have the best student experience possible.
Making sure you have access to every service you might need, whether it is through an advisor, tutor, coach, counselor or faculty member, is a top priority at JWU — where staff and faculty aim to help and support students beginning on their very first day. JWU provides a wide variety of student support services at all four campuses to help students feel at home, reach their goals and follow their passions.
“The whole team in academic support is great! They jump in ready to help at any time so that no student is left behind.”
Sherlisha Scroggins, a senior majoring in Hotel Lodging Management at JWU’s Charlotte Campus, shares her story about receiving the services that best match her individual needs, and how she’s been supported every step of the way by her advisor:
“My journey with a learning disability began when I was in the second grade, and I was given my first individualized educational plan (IEP). At first, I didn’t understand why I was in separate rooms from other students or why someone was reading to me. After a while, I understood that this plan was put in place to help me further my education. My time at JWU and the help I have received from the Center for Academic Support (CAS) for the last 3 years has been amazing. The services began my freshman year when I was involved with the Jumpstart program that helps students with basic math. During the years I have been here I have been advised by Ms. Susan Flaherty, who is an awesome person, with registering for classes, testing, tutoring and just life advice. The whole team in academic support is great! They jump in ready to help at any time so that no student is left behind.”
At JWU, you have access to a wide range of services, including tutoring and mentorship programs, health and counseling services, accessibility accommodations and many more. There’s an entire JWU community behind students to help each thrive and make the most of their potential.
All students have access to the student support services listed below and, on our Student Support Services website, throughout their JWU experience:
“We have students who are unique; they're eager to be involved. They know what they want. They know they have worked hard to get where they are.”
Associate Dean of Student Affairs Joseph Barresi Jr., Ph.D., LICSW, LCDP, has seen firsthand how students at JWU thrive regardless of any specific needs they might have:
“We have students who are unique; they're eager to be involved. They know what they want. They know they have worked hard to get where they are. Our student body is rich and diverse, and we've learned to embrace them and promote their diversity in a way that they learn not only from faculty but from each other … they really grow and flourish here. Students with diverse learning needs who may need particular accommodation plans can come into the accessibility services office so we can ensure that they get all the support they need.”
